At 2: 00 p.m. on November 2, 2018, the 3rd Session on “How to Teach A Course Well”, Module 2 of the PKU Training Program for Young Teachers opened at Classroom 308, Science Teaching Building of Peking University. The session was jointly delivered by Prof. YU Daoheng from the Senior Professors Teaching Research Team and Prof. DENG Hui from the College of Urban and Environmental Sciences. The two professors had discussions with more than 60 young teachers from different faculties and departments on how to teach a course well.

Prof. YU started by talking about the change of role for the newly recruited young teachers, which naturally led to the question of “how to teach a course well”. Then he systematically explained the teaching planning methods and principles from the design aspects of curriculum outlines and teaching plans. Based on his years of teaching experience and observations of nearly 600 classes, he proceeded to share his insights: “One minute on the stage requires ten years of practice off the stage”; “It is a teacher’s lifelong responsibility to learn and to educate people”; and “Outstanding teachers at PKU should be highly competent for both scientific research and teaching”, encouraging the young teachers to “thirst for knowledge” and “be a person of great wisdom who appears slow-witted” in their teaching practices.

Reflecting on his many years of undergraduate teaching experience, Prof. DENG Hui pointed out that teaching a course well would require both professional “knowledge preparation” and “technical preparation”. He suggested that the young teachers should further practise and hone their basic teaching skills and techniques, learn teaching methods through observing the classroom teaching delivered by experienced teachers, and reflect on and improve their teaching practices through micro-teaching, classroom recording and other means. Mr. DENG also shared the evaluation data on the two courses he has been teaching over the years and encouraged the young teachers to continuously reflect on and improve their teaching performance.

Adopting a witty and vivid teaching style, Prof. YU and Prof. DENG cited many amusing anecdotes about class teaching, which triggered bursts of laughter. The training session ended in loud applause, and the participants said they had gained substantially from the session.

The PKU Training Program for Young Teachers, which was jointly organized by CETL and the Personnel Department, was officially launched in September 2016 and has rotated for the second round. The follow-up training activities for young teachers in this semester will focus on specific teaching methods, with the aim of building a platform for the faculty to share and discuss their teaching experience. All previous training materials have been published on Teaching and Learning @ PKU, available to young teachers who were unable to attend the live training sessions.
