Center for Excellent Teaching and Learning Held Training Project Seminar and Expert Appointment Ceremony

On the afternoon of January 11th, the “Training Project Seminar and Expert Appointment Ceremony” organized by PKU Training Program for Young Teachers was held in the fourth conference room of Ho Ying Chie Overseas Exchange Center. 27 experts including Vice President & Registrar of PKU, Gong Qihuang, Director of the Department of Education, Fu Suiyan, Deputy Head of the Senior Professor Research Group, Yu Daoheng, Director of the Center for Excellent Teaching and Learning of PKU, Sun Hua, Director of the Center for Excellent Teaching and Learning of PKU Health Science Center, Cai Jingyi, Deputy Director of the Department of Education, Liu Jianbo, Deputy Director of the Faculty of Humanities, Li Silong, and experts from various schools attended the meeting.

Deng Hui, Deputy Director of the Center for Excellent Teaching and Learning, first introduced the basic information of training program for young teachers. He pointed out that under the guidance of the documents issued by the Peking University, the training program has been in operation since 2016 and now been in its third round. The program has been recognized by most of the young teachers. At the same time, He expressed that a stable training expert team is an important guarantee for better training young teachers, and hoped that the experts present can conduct in-depth discussions on how to further improve the quality of training and better meet the needs of young teachers.

Sun Hua, Director of the Center for Excellent Teaching and Learning, then delivered a speech and expressed gratitude to the experts who attended the meeting. He said, firstly, due to changes in the times, in students, and in the needs of teachers, the university urges that the Center will be able to train our teachers in a comprehensive manner. Secondly, Peking University should have more good courses to be shared online. This is also the social responsibility of PKU. Thirdly, all the public classrooms on campus have been opened as self-study classrooms. It is hope that the small reform of classrooms can incite a much stronger one in the field of teaching.

Sun Hua then read the list of the first batch experts of the PKU Training Program for Young Teachers. Gong Qihuang delivered a letter of appointment for each of them, and quoted the Minister of Education as saying that “a university that does not focus on undergraduate education is an unqualified university. A president who does not attach importance to undergraduate education is an unqualified president. A professor who does not participate in undergraduate education is an unqualified professor” to emphasize the importance of teaching. He pointed out that teaching is the main business of the university, and young teacher training is a work that the university attaches great importance to. It is therefore of great significance to hire training experts. At the same time, it is suggested that the teaching assistant should take up the duties of the post. Gong said that the Center is competent in the management and training of teaching assistants.

The experts attending the meeting had a heated discussion on the young teacher training program and put forward some specific suggestions on how to guide young teachers to better view and learn from the courses, how to help them understand the students from their perspective, and how to better use the micro-teaching to help them make reflection. It is also recommended to organize special events to solve the teaching problems of young teachers such as salons, seminars and other kinds of activities; and the experts believe that a reasonable reward and punishment system should be in place. In short, the participants greatly recognized the work done by the Center and expressed their willingness to further support the teaching and training programs for young teachers and contribute to the education of Peking University.

Through this seminar, the Center and the participating experts conducted a comprehensive discussion and summary of the young teacher training program. They hoped that in the future, the Center can further improve the teacher development mechanism and strengthen the training capacity, so as to better serve the education and teaching reform of PKU.
