Peking University Increases Self-study Rooms and Extends Their Opening Hours

Recently, Peking University has opened all of its public classrooms and extended the self-study hours to facilitate students’ preparations for final exams.

Since the end of November 2018, the Geology Building has been opened to all teachers and students for self-study. To date, all the public classrooms at the First, Second, Third, and Fourth Teaching Buildings, the Science Teaching Building, the Chinese and History Building, and the Geology Building have been opened for self-study. At present, the opening hours of the teaching buildings are from 7: 00 to 22: 30, and during the examination period, the opening hours will be extended to 23: 00. From December 31, the Chinese and History Building and the Geology Building will be open to 24: 00 during the examination period.

Teachers and students can easily inquire about the availability of all classrooms in each teaching building for the recent three days through “Available Classrooms” on the campus portal. On the students’ interface of the homepage of the Department of Academic Affairs, they can also inquire about the status of classrooms and make reservations, including borrowing classrooms for students’ activities, reserving small classrooms, and inquiring about the availability of classrooms. Before the final exams, PKU will inform the students about the occupancy of classrooms for the exams.

Placing a high priority on the usage management of classrooms and public spaces, PKU has established administrative units and made continuous efforts to renovate the teaching buildings and promote online reservation, with a view to creating a good learning, research and living atmosphere for teachers and students.

In 2017, PKU conducted a comprehensive renovation of the Geology Building. After the renovation, it became PKU’s newest teaching building boasting comfortable desks and chairs, good environmental quality and fresh air (central ventilation system), very much in favor with the teachers and students since it was opened for class scheduling. The students have always hoped that the classrooms in the Geology Building can be opened to them for self-study. Since it was put into operation over one year ago, the equipment in the teaching building has been running stably, and it is now ready to be fully opened for use.

In May 2018, the CETL reformed the public spaces in the Science Teaching Building. More self-study seats were added and isolated areas for small group discussions were allocated in self-study spaces, creating a warm and comfortable atmosphere.

To provide better classroom services and make the best use of the limited resources for teaching, learning and scientific research, PKU has established the PKU Management Center for Public Teaching and Learning Resources to coordinate the planning, development, allocation, management, technical support and maintenance of its public teaching and learning resources. Since the center was established, it has provided services including construction of public spaces in teaching buildings, online reservation of discussion rooms, inquiry system for available classrooms, etc.

Since November 2017, the center has made available a discussion room reservation system to all faculty members and students. They can make reservations on the website or a WeChat Mini Program. Presently, 47 small classrooms with a capacity for 10 or more people have been opened in the Second and Fourth Teaching Buildings and the Geology Building.
