“PKU Undergraduate Education Development” of Training Program for Young Teachers organized by the Center for Excellent Teaching and Learning was Launched

At 2 p.m. September 25, 2020, the first lecture of the “Teaching Philosophy and Teaching Method” module of the Training Program for Young Teachers at PKU jointly organized by the Center for Excellent Teaching and Learning and the Office of Human Resources was be held in Classroom 308, Science Teaching Building of PKU. CAS Academician Gong Qihuang, Executive Vice President, Provost, and Dean of the Graduate School of Peking University, delivered a keynote speech titled Accelerating the Advancement of' the Double First-Class Initiative to Build a High-Level Talent Training System. Professor Fu Suiyan, Minister of Educational Affairs Department, delivered a keynote speech titled Training of Talents in the Undergraduate Education of PKU. 68 young teachers participated in the event.

Gong Qihuang elaborated on the progress that Peking University has made in recent years in promoting the Double First-Class Initiative in terms of education and teaching, faculty building, scientific research, discipline layout, and resource space. He pointed out that “double first-class” refers to first-class universities and first-class disciplines. Fundamentally speaking, first-class teachers and first-class students are necessary for first-class teaching and first-class scientific research. He expounded on the key measures to be adopted to accelerate the initiative from three levels, i.e. PKU, departments and schools. These measures include making sustained efforts to improve education quality in a people-centered approach aiming at cultivating more students with outstanding talents and integrity, remaining true to the original aspiration of nurturing more talents, training high-level talents, serving the national strategy, deepening the reform of the human resources system, accelerating the construction of the new campus, and promoting the development of new engineering and interdisciplinary subjects. Gong Qihuang stressed that as pushing forward the initiative is challenging and arduous, young teachers must remain focused and level-headed, meet the major needs of the country and catch up with the frontier of the world’s most advanced science and technology, strengthen original innovation, and strive to become top-notch talents.

Fu Suiyan’s speech focused on three aspects, namely, the unchanged mission and talent training goals, new challenges and ideas for undergraduate education reform, and work priorities in the future. She said that the core mission of the university is to cultivate talents, and the fundamentals of training talents of integrity, and the student-centered approach remain unchanged. However, the world is changing, China is changing, and students are also changing. Talents in the future should have outstanding personal qualities. Therefore, Our teaching philosophy, teaching content, learning methods, and evaluation standards need to be adjusted accordingly. To this end, PKU has conducted a series of teaching reforms centered on student growth. The three key words of the reform are: integration, interdisciplinary, and independent choice. She also expounded on the key areas of work in the future, namely, continuously improving the training system in a future-oriented approach, driven by mission to promote the overall development of students, raising identity awareness and promoting teachers’ devotion to teaching, and fulfilling responsibilities to continuously enhance teaching management.

The teachers attending the training said that the it was very rewarding. Thanks to the training, they deepened understanding of Peking University, felt they should work harder because they have huge responsibilities, became acutely aware of the significance of teaching as the top priority of a teacher, had a preliminary knowledge of PKU’s goals in teaching development, and developed a certain understanding of the undergraduate curriculum system and educational needs. They believed they would develop more targeted teaching plan in the future thanks to the knowledge.

This semester’s training courses for young teachers will focus on teaching philosophy and teaching method. Further arrangements include sessions aimed at understanding PKU students, lectures on how to deliver a good course, lecture-based teaching, interactive teaching, learning assessment and course evaluation, ideological and political education and practice, innovation and entrepreneurship education, and scientific vocalism principles and practical skills, as well as teaching observations and teaching salons.
