The Ideological and Political Education Development Salon was Held

At 12-15 o’clock September 28, the Ideological and Political Education Development Salon co-organized by the Center for Excellent Teaching and Learning, Department of Faculty Affairs, Educational Affairs Department and Graduate School was held in Classroom 403 of the Audio-visual Teaching Building. The salon was attended by 18 representatives of teachers from many PKU schools and departments, including the School of Earth and Space Sciences, Department of Sociology, School of Life Sciences, School of Foreign Languages, School of Economics, and School of Basic Medical Sciences. They shared their views and practice of ideological and political education in courses by citing examples of teaching. Professor Sun Hua, Director of the Center for Excellent Teaching and Learning, Professor Liu Jianbo, Vice-minister of the Educational Affairs Department, and Lu Aihong of the Graduate School discussed with the participating teachers from the perspectives of interpreting policies of ideological and political education in courses and the implementation plan of Peking University in promoting the ideological and political education in courses (draft for comments) about the ideas and innovative practice of ideological and political education in specialized courses of PKU.

The salon was moderated by Feng Fei of the Center for Excellent Teaching and Learning. Professor Sun Hua gave a presentation on Promoting Students’ Morality and Integrating by Conducting Ideological and Political Education in Courses. Professor Sun pointed out that conducting ideological and political education in courses is a strategic measure to cultivate students of high moral standards and integrity. When doing so, different schools and departments should find materials of their own characteristics by taking into account their different features, and give full play to the role of multiple ways and channels such as classroom teaching, professional internship, and social practice, so that students can develop a strong sense of morality and integrity step by step. Teachers of Peking University have been implementing moral and integrity education on and off campus for many years, and giving full play to the function of education. Now we should review existing practices and problems, make upgrade and improvement on this basis, and sum up experience with PKU style in this regard.

Professor Liu Jianbo systematically elaborated on the Implementation Plan of Peking University in Promoting the Ideological and Political Education in Courses (draft for comments). Professor Liu pointed out that the goal of PKU’s ideological and political education in courses is to cultivate socialist successors with all-round development in moral, intellectual, physical, aesthetics and labor aspects. Efforts should be made to give full play to the educating function of all courses through ideological and political education to build a comprehensive education pattern that involves everyone throughout the whole process. In the future, efforts will be made to encourage all the teachers of PKU to take part in it through the development of exemplary specialties, demonstration courses, teaching materials, and second classroom in this regard to realize the integrated development of values, knowledge and ability which will benefit students.

Lu Aihong of the Graduate School shared the development of ideological and political education in courses at the Graduate School of Peking University. The ideological and political education in courses at the Graduate School is one of the courses receiving huge support and massive funding this year. Lu stressed that different specialty courses should explore the ideological and political educational elements with their own characteristics and summed up features by citing examples.

Then teachers of specialty courses shared their views and exploration in this regard. The sharing covered 7 undergraduate and 7 graduate courses and specialties, with each teacher introducing the teaching cases, homework assignments, classroom activities, and extracurricular tutoring that reflect the ideological and political aspects of the course. They showed how PKU teachers set a good example and quietly guide students to mature in a step-by-step manner.

Hosted by the Center for Excellent Teaching and Learning, the salon series aims to build an exchange platform for PKU departments and front-line teachers to discuss and study ideological and political education in PKU courses, and guide Peking University teachers to summarize the experience and findings from different perspectives and levels, and study and sum up the scientific thinking and professional methods of ideological and political education in specialty courses. The Center for Excellent Teaching and Learning will organize such salons on a regular basis as a training session, carry out research-based training and discussion around the key issues of this subject, and further promote the ideological and political education in courses of PKU.
