PKU-UMich Teaching Development Webinar Kicks Off

On October 26, the PKU-UMich Teaching Development Webinar, which is jointly organized by the Office of International Relations, Peking University, the Center for Excellent Teaching and Learning at PKU (CETL), and the University of Michigan’s Center for Research on Learning and Teaching (CRLT), kicked off. The webinar, which is centered on the theme of “Innovation and Evidence-Based Teaching” will last till October 31. 117 teachers at PKU and 66 teachers from other institutions have signed up for the seminar.

The session held from 8:00 to 9:00 on October 26 mainly gave an overall introduction of the webinar. Dr. Matthew Kaplan, Executive Director, CRLT and Professor Sun Hua, Director, CETL each delivered a welcome address. Dr. Matthew Kaplan introduced some experts from the University of Michigan, including Dr. Zhu Erping, Director of CRLT China Programs, Dr. Malinda Mathney, Managing Director for Educational Development and Assessment Services, CRLT, Dr. Deborah Meizlish, Associate Director, CRLT, and Dr. Whitney Peoples, Director, Educational Development & Assessment Services, Coordinator of DEI Initiatives & Critical Race Pedagogies, CRLT. Zhu Erping introduced the objectives, format and schedule of the webinar, and gave detailed answers to questions about the webinar.

CRLT Institute Team Presenters

From 20:00 to 22:15 on October 26, the first thematic session of the PKU-UMich Teaching Development Webinar was held. The session was centered on the theme of “Innovative Teaching and Learning at the University of Michigan” and featured the keynote speakers of Dr. Matthew Kaplan, Executive Director of CRLT and Dr. Zhu Erping. 120 practising teachers, education managers and teaching development personnel participated through Zoom.

Matthew Kaplan gave a brief introduction to the University of Michigan and CRLT. Founded in 1962, CRLT is the first center for teaching research for higher education in the United States. CRLT is dedicated to the support and advancement of equitable, evidence-based learning and teaching practices and the professional development of all members of the campus teaching community. He introduced ten methods and working principles adopted by CRLT to improve undergraduate teaching, and explained what is evidence-based learning and teaching practices, what is innovation, and how to innovate. In the Q&A session of the first part, the participating teachers enthusiastically asked questions in the chat box, and had discussions with Matthew on such topics as evidence-based teaching and innovative teaching.

Zhu Erping introduced the concept, institutional background and types of innovative teaching and presented two cases of innovative teaching through video, with a view to offering a framework of thinking for the faculty to introduce innovative approaches and make changes to their teaching practices.

Following the keynote speeches, the participating teachers were divided into 10 groups for discussions on the theme. They mainly shared their gains and doubts, and the leader of each group produced and submitted a summary of their discussions.

This webinar is aimed at strengthening exchanges and cooperation on teaching development with overseas first-class universities, promoting the sustainable development of teaching competence among the faculty, and further enhancing the overall teaching quality of Peking University. Another four sessions will be held on the evenings of October 27, 28, 29 and 30, on the themes of “Research on the Best Practices of College Teaching and Inclusive Teaching”, “Active Learning and Innovative Teaching: How to Start”, “Assessment of Learning and Teaching”, “Academic Research on Teaching, Effective Design and Teaching Methods for Major Courses”.
